Set against the rolling backdrop of the Texas Hill Country, the transformation of Westlake Country Club redefines the private club experience in Austin, TX. Inspired by the city’s beloved Violet Crown sunsets and the relaxed sophistication of Hill Country living, the renovated clubhouse balances refined elegance with a quietly western warmth—polished yet approachable, elevated yet inviting.
Thiel & Team led the comprehensive interior design transformation, shaping member dining, social, and arrival experiences into a cohesive, hospitality-driven environment tailored to Westlake’s discerning membership.
A Reimagined Dining + Social Experience
A strategic reworking of the existing layout improved circulation, enhanced sightlines, and introduced a more intuitive flow throughout the clubhouse. By extending the dining experience into the dramatic triple-height entry volume, the design creates energy and openness while maintaining intimacy.
The expanded indoor dining areas are complemented by an additional 1,000 square feet of outdoor patio space overlooking the lush fairways. Framed by Austin’s iconic sunsets, the patio seamlessly extends the member experience outdoors—supporting everything from lively gatherings to relaxed, lingering evenings.
Anchoring the social atmosphere, the reimagined bar now features generous seating, elevated finishes, Napa Technology wine stations, and temperature-controlled wine storage. A visible wine cellar, prominently positioned along key sightlines, acts as a signature focal point—celebrating Westlake’s culture of gathering and refinement.
Elevated Arrival + Member Functionality
Upon entry, members are welcomed into a redesigned lobby experience where a dual-purpose reception and host stand supports both club operations and dining functions with clarity and ease. The enhanced flow strengthens the connection between arrival, dining, and social spaces—creating a cohesive first impression.
Secondary spaces, including the conference room, boardroom, Kid’s Club entry, restrooms, and circulation corridors, were thoughtfully refreshed to align with the new design language—ensuring a consistent, elevated member experience throughout.
A Tailored Hill Country Aesthetic
Drawing inspiration from Austin’s renowned restaurant scene and the surrounding residential architecture, the interiors layer natural textures with refined materials. Custom furnishings, curated finishes, and sculptural decorative lighting create warmth and visual depth while reinforcing a polished hospitality atmosphere.
The aesthetic walks a careful line—much like a well-worn pair of boots paired with a perfectly tailored jacket. It is distinctly Austin: gently western, sophisticated without pretense, and deeply centered on connection.
