Arlo Portland: Reviving a Local Landmark for Modern Living
Formerly a local bowling alley, this multifamily residence captures the spirit of Portland, OR, while honoring its roots. Our goal was to repurpose and preserve as much of the original bowling alley as possible. Unique elements like the bowling floor, pins, and equipment have been incorporated into the finishes and artwork, adding a sense of history and character to the space. Inspired to create a warm, “worn” aesthetic, we’ve infused industrial lighting and details throughout, with a particular focus on unique lighting choices.
Situated in a culturally vibrant area, we aimed to incorporate locally crafted pieces wherever possible. This property was designed for a community that values simplicity and connection to its surroundings, with many residents choosing public transit or biking as their primary mode of commute. In line with their lifestyle, we prioritized amenities for dog care and biking, giving these spaces as much time and attention as all the other amenities.
Reflecting Portland’s rich greenery, the design incorporates features like a faux living wall and custom greenery, bringing the lush, natural environment indoors. Located in a dynamic neighborhood with local shops, eateries, and outdoor activities, this residence is intended to feel like an integral part of the community—a unique and welcoming home as distinctive and unique as the residents themselves.
